The Tonkünstler Orchestra is one of Austria’s most important symphony orchestras and serves as the official state orchestra of Lower Austria. Founded in 1907, it has developed into a key institution in the country’s classical music landscape, performing regularly in both Vienna and other cultural centers in the region.

The orchestra’s concerts take place at several prominent venues. Its main residences include the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna and the Festspielhaus St. Pölten in Lower Austria. These locations host many of its symphonic programs and special performances throughout the season.

Through its concerts, tours, and recordings, the orchestra acts as a musical ambassador for Austria. It regularly represents Austrian musical culture internationally while maintaining strong ties to the region where it is based.

The Tonkünstler Orchestra consists of around one hundred professional musicians who perform a wide range of orchestral repertoire each season. Their work includes large symphonic programs, special thematic concerts, and educational initiatives for audiences.

The orchestra has been led by several internationally respected conductors over the years. Among them are Walter Weller, Fabio Luisi, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada, all of whom contributed to shaping its artistic direction.

Since the 2025–2026 season, the orchestra has been conducted by Fabien Gabel as chief conductor, succeeding Yutaka Sado, who led the ensemble for a decade and later became its honorary conductor.

A Rich Musical Tradition

The Tonkünstler Orchestra focuses primarily on traditional orchestral repertoire, especially works from the Classical and Romantic periods as well as music of the twentieth century. These core pieces form the foundation of many of its concerts and artistic programs.

Alongside traditional symphonic music, the orchestra also explores innovative programming. It occasionally incorporates crossover projects, contemporary compositions, and collaborations with artists from genres such as jazz and world music.

This combination of tradition and experimentation allows the orchestra to remain relevant to modern audiences. By balancing historic masterpieces with fresh musical ideas, the Tonkünstler Orchestra maintains a dynamic and diverse artistic profile.
