Admittedly, for the younger generation of the time Joseph Marx’s reputation wasn’t a good one. In post-war Austria, the composer, teacher and functionary who died in 1964 was considered too strictly conservative and backward-looking. But today there are increasing signs that the time is ripe for a fair assessment, perhaps even a rediscovery of Marx’s music. Its quality is based on a unique mixture of the Bach-based artistry of a Max Reger, the Impressionistic valeurs of a Claude Debussy and the harmonically mystical boldness of an Alexander Skriabin. One of those fascinated by it is Fabien Gabel: together with the Tonkunstler and in conversation with Albert Hosp, the Music Director shows how beguiling such works as the «Symphonische Nachtmusik» can sound. So the only possible answer to the question of the title is: Yes!
